Worship

Sunday Services

The people of St. John’s gather each Sunday to share prayer, engage scripture, and embody community in the simple, sacred meal of Eucharist (thanksgiving), by which Jesus invited his friends to celebrate his living memory. Our members, friends, and guests are joined by the Spirit in Holy Communion, as we are nourished for lives and ministries of hospitality, service, and peacemaking.

In weekly worship, we are guided from open doors to open table, where we’re called time and again to offer our own lives to be opened—our minds set free and hearts set afire. As we approach the humble banquet of Christ, Jesus welcomes, feeds, and renews each and all of us; seekers, sinners, saints alike. Graciously accepting his invitation to a new way of life, rooted in compassion, we are called anew to claim and proclaim good news of love, justice, and peace.

Holy Communion is celebrated at 9:00 Sunday mornings in the church sanctuary.  Nursery care is provided during the service for children under 3; a Soft-space furnished with books and quiet toys is also available near the altar for parents who prefer to accompany their little ones in the midst of the worship area.  Children 3 and older are invited to participate in Church School activities, before rejoining the congregation at the Peace to share in Holy Communion. Everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged to come forward to receive the sacrament or a blessing. This weekly gathering at the Lord’s table is followed by a coffee hour in our Parish Hall, to which all members, neighbors, guests, and visitors are also warmly welcomed. During the colder winter months, this ‘fellowship feast’ is held fireside, by the warming light of our parish hearth.

All Age Services

The first Sunday of each month, St. John’s celebrates inter-generational All-Ages worship, welcoming Church School members to join in our whole Holy Communion service. Child-friendly homilies and musical selections are intended to ground this service in a more interactive experience that extends St. John’s welcome to include, integrate, and engage the youngest members of our community.

Choir & Music Ministry

St. John’s Choir holds rehearsals Sunday mornings at 8:00 am to plan and prepare occasional musical offerings to fill our sanctuary, sharing their musical gifts to enhance the beauty and delight of our worship, while leading the participation of the congregation in making ‘a joyful noise’ unto God.

Prayer Requests

An updated copy of the parish prayer list is available in the narthex (front entrance area) prior to the service, for members or guests to add names, concerns, and thanksgivings. You may also add names of persons in special need to our prayer list by emailing St. John’s Church Office: office@stjohnshv.org.

Worship Ministries

The rhythm of our regular worship services are maintained by the dedicated efforts of a wide array of St. John’s parishioners. The range of worship ministries includes the work of members of the Altar and Flower Guilds, Acolytes and Eucharistic Ministers, and Ushers and Greeters. Each of these groups welcomes the interest and involvement of newcomers, for whom any necessary training and orientation are easily provided.

Seasonal and Special Services

In addition to weekly worship on Sunday mornings, special prayer series and services are offered seasonally. Watch our Events listings for offerings during Advent and Lent, as well as thoughout the year for all our offerings. Times and locations for these, and for our annual evening observances of Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and the Great Vigil at Easter will be updated on St. John’s homepage.

St. John’s also celebrates rites of passage in the lives of its members and those of the wider community.  The sacrament of Baptism, by which new (infant, child, or adult) members are fully initiated into the church as the living Body of Christ, is celebrated in the context of Sunday morning Communion services, usually at dates designated by the church calendar.

Weddings are celebrated in both the contemporary setting of our church sanctuary and in the more traditional atmosphere of our historic Chapel. Our open-minded community warmly welcomes engaged couples to faithfully and lovingly prepare for marriage, in consultation with the rector. St. John’s also hosts funerals and memorial services, and our rector is available to offer pastoral care and companionship through funeral planning, and the journey of grief. Persons interested in applying for a burial plot in the cemetery please contact the parish office. To arrange a baptism, marriage, or funeral, please contact the Rector through the Parish Office at 215.947.3212215.947.3212.
